About Us

The Atlas of Inspiring Latin American Scientists celebrates the contributions of researchers who are advancing science across Latin America. This open-source resource highlights scientists who have returned to their home countries after training in the Global North (U.S., Canada, Europe) to establish independent research programs and pursue critical scientific questions.
This platform serves as a tool for discovery, collaboration, and networking—connecting Latin American researchers across disciplines and borders. By showcasing the impactful work conducted by scientists in the Global South, the Atlas challenges the perception that innovation only happens in a few countries or languages. It creates visibility for research that is often overlooked in global scientific narratives, while demonstrating that scientific excellence is global, multilingual, and deeply human.
The Atlas builds on the model of the Atlas of Inspiring Hispanic/Latinx Scientists created by Dr. Christina Termini at Fred Hutch Cancer Center. Through detailed researcher profiles, we aim to amplify Latin American scientists' work, promote international collaboration, and increase the visibility and funding of research led by scientists in the region.
Recent discussions—including a commentary published in Nature—have emphasized the need to rethink how scientific impact is measured and recognized, especially for researchers in the Global South. Many of these scientists face persistent challenges in gaining recognition and funding, despite conducting innovative and meaningful work. This project responds to that call by amplifying their voices, celebrating their achievements, and showcasing the global importance of their research.

Our Vision
To build a vital, community-driven resource where young scientists can see themselves reflected, find mentors who inspire them, and believe that they too belong in science.
